Poetry Editor

The deadline to apply for this position is February 1, 2017.

Territory is currently looking for a Poetry Editor to join our team. We want someone with a strong understanding of the current poetry and literary magazine landscape and who reads and appreciates a wide range of styles, but also someone who wants to create something strange and new.

Responsibilities

There are a few core responsibilities to the position:

  • Soliciting and editing 5-10 contributions per issue (released every season)
  • Reading and responding to general submissions (workload dependent on volume)
  • Running a monthly meeting to discuss poetry solicitations and submissions

There's also a lot of room to expand these responsibilities to...

  • conceiving and managing contests, inserts, and other special features
  • organizing readings and other events
  • writing short pieces for our blog, which is currently in the planning phase. These could be or be about:
    • Personal or critical essays on poetry, poetics, maps, and combinations therein
    • Reviews
    • Interviews
    • Surveys of poetry/writing scenes in specific cities, regions, states, etc.
    • [ you tell us ]

Commitment

We want someone who can commit for at least two years (8 issues) for about 4-6 hours a week. Depending on how quickly Territory grows, we can put out this call again for additional editors.

Keep in mind we're just two writers running this project in our spare time and out of pocket. We would love to be able to compensate people for their time and valuable work but are unable to do so at the moment.

How to Apply

To submit an application, send an email to territorylit@gmail.com with the subject line "Application - Poetry Editor: [First Name] [Last Name]” and the following information attached in a single file:

  • No more than 500 words on why you’re interested working with us and your vision for the position. This should be both philosophical and logistical.
  • 5-7 poems (at least 3 published) that represent a broad range of your work and/or provide context for your editorial vision
  • 5 poets you would consider soliciting for the journal and a brief rationale
  • A resume including your educational, professional, and editorial experience
